LEROY GRANNIS: LEGENDARY SURF PHOTOGRAPHER

LeRoy "Granny" Grannis was born in Hermosa Beach in 1917, and considered by many to be the premier photographer of California's thriving surf culture in the 60's and 70's, only starting his epic career at the age of 42 yrs old. The New York Times once called him the "godfather of surf photography". LeRoy was a surfer himself and got his start selling photographs for $1 to surfers on the beach. He went on to work as the head photographer of Surfing Illustrated and in 1964 co-founded International Surfing, now called Surfing magazine. He surfed well into his 80’s, until a hip injury forced him to stop. On February 3, 2011, Grannis died of natural causes at his home in Torrence at the age of 93.

BERLIN & BEYOND: HELGA PARIS

Helga Paris, born in 1938 in Gollnow was best known for her melancholic photography in Germany in the 70's and 80's. One of my favorite groups of work from her were known as 'Berlin Teenagers'... reflecting memories from her own childhood. 

NYC PUNK MODEL: ANYA PHILLIPS

Anya Phillips was one of the first punk models and was involved in the NYC punk scene in her early twenties, while working as a dominatrix. In her short lived life, Anya was the manager and girlfriend of New York-based musician James Chance (aka James White)and was also the co-founder of legendary New York nightclub the Mudd Club. Her influence on the fashion, sound and look of the New York-based No Wavescene of the late 1970s, continues to be in fashion today. So much a part of the scene, she was a friend and designed clothing for Debbie Harry and was also involved in New York City's late 70s underground film scene, appearing in Amos Poe's The Foreigner in 1978. There's a Mudd Club story that she punched out a girl cause she didn't like the way she was dancing...a real New York kind of girl.

FASHION MUSE: ANITA PALLENBERG

We never seem to get tired of talking about Anita Pallenberg, Italian born actress, model and fashion designer. She dated Brian Jones and later Keith Richards and spent a lot of time influencing the Rolling Stones' androgynous looks. Not only does her stlye sense live on, but she's been a great influence on us! enjoy...

Anita has inspired several Stones classics...

brief history of denim, the fabric phenomenon of the last centuries:

in the eighteenth century as trade, slave labour, and cotton plantations increased, workers wore jean cloth because the material was very strong and it did not wear out easily. the word jeans comes from a kind of material that was made in europe.
the material, called jean, was named after sailors from genoa in italy,because they wore clothes made from it. the word 'denim' probably came from the name of a french material, serge de nimes:serge (a kind of material) from nimes (a town in france). class dismissed! now enjoy these pics...
